Infinite Parts

  • Get into a comfortable position, fix your body still.
  • Take a few minutes to focus on your breath, watch the air flow out and in.
  • Turn your focus again to your body. See how the mind is creating this idea of “body” out of all the disparate parts that you feel.
  • Now we will check and see: are those parts themselves really there?
  • Focus on your left hand. Get a clear feeling and picture of it in your mind.
  • See now how it too is composed of many parts that you would have to feel one by one: each part of the fingers, the palm, the back of the hand.
  • So the mind must also be taking all these disparate parts and gathering them together to create the concept of “a hand.”
  • “Hand” is not really out there—it is just an idea in the mind, superimposed over several different moments of experience.
  • Now focus on one of those parts—your left index finger.
  • See how many parts of its own it has. See how you have to experience these parts one by one. The top of the finger, up to the first crease, the joint, the base, the front, the back.
  • So “left index finger” is really just a concept of the mind, created by gathering together moments of experience, overlaying an image onto disparate parts.
  • What about the tip of the finger? Can you feel each separate part? It too would have to be pasted together from all its disparate parts. It too is a concept.
  • Then think: you can take a part of the tip of the finger and divide that too into separate moments of experience. In fact, you could keep on dividing like this, infinitely.
  • So ask yourself this question: how are you feeling all those parts of parts of parts of the body in time for the mind to synthesize them all together and see or feel a body?
  • You’re not! It’s impossible. And that’s one proof that the body you see and feel right now is not out there— it is just an image coming from your mind.
